Nel 1997 la società biancoceleste decide di trasferirlo a titolo definitivo in Serie B alla Salernitana , che guida alla sua seconda promozione in Serie A, nella stagione 1997-1998 vincendo il titolo di capocannoniere della Serie B con 21 gol.
Nella stagione seguente la Salernitana, nonostante i 12 gol di Di Vaio, retrocedette in Serie B per un solo punto. Il calciatore comunque acquistato dal Parma e resta in Serie A.
Nell'agosto del 2002, viene acquistato dalla Juventus .

Con i bianconeri si laurea Campione d'Italia vincendo lo Scudetto 2002-2003. In summer 2004 it was sold in Spain at Valencia . Here he played a positive year scoring 11 goals.
