Makita 520i Chainsaw Blade

light and precise as numbers

Gabriele Lolli, a professor of logic and philosophy of mathematics (at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa), has published a nice article last Wednesday about "Tuttolibri" de "La Stampa", making some comments about the American Lessons Italo Calvino. The title of this post is taken out in that Article.

That book of Calvin was one of my readings from college and not a little influenced my decision to leave engineering to enroll in Mathematics. In particular was the chapter entitled "Accuracy" to hit. And this talk, with interesting suggestions, Gabriele Lolli.

I believe that his book on American Lessons will end up on my shelf, next to that of Italo Calvino.
Moving from Calvin's statement that "the scientific attitude and the poetic coincide: both are attitudes together research and design, discovery and invention, "Gabriele Lolli discovers that the American Lessons can be read as a parable of mathematics and that the topics treated in them (Light, Speed, Accuracy, Visibility, Multiplicity) are essential properties of mathematical thinking creatively.
